About Sophie Usher, MA RCC & CCC
Registered Clinical Counsellor & Canadian Certified Counsellor
From my earliest memories, I’ve been passionate about helping others and creating spaces where growth, healing, and self-discovery can thrive. My work is rooted in the belief that every person has the capacity for transformation when provided with a compassionate, non-judgmental environment to explore their experiences.
My journey began in the non-profit community sector, where I spent five years supporting disadvantaged populations in Greater Victoria. These experiences shaped my trauma-informed, client-centered approach, meeting individuals with openness, curiosity, and a deep commitment to understanding their unique stories.
In my practice, I help clients uncover negative patterns, create new thought processes, and develop mindful habits that foster positive self-reflection and lasting change. I specialize in guiding individuals through challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, identity exploration, life transitions, grief, and substance use. By tailoring therapy to your needs, I aim to support you in building resilience, reclaiming balance, and finding fulfillment in your life.
Let’s work together to uncover the possibilities within you and move toward the life you want to create.
My practice focuses in the following areas:
Trauma, Anxiety, and Depression: I provide trauma-informed care and a safe, non-judgmental space for individuals navigating the challenges of trauma, anxiety, and depression. Together, we will explore and process experiences, uncover unhelpful patterns, and develop practical coping strategies. My approach focuses on building resilience and fostering emotional balance to help you move forward with strength and confidence.
Grief and Loss: Grief can feel overwhelming, but healing is possible. I provide a compassionate environment where clients can process their loss, honour their emotions, and explore ways to find meaning and growth amidst difficult experiences.
Self-Esteem and Identity Exploration: I support individuals in addressing self-doubt and navigating the complexities of self-discovery. By creating a compassionate space to explore vulnerabilities, values, and personal goals, we will work together to build a stronger sense of self-worth, foster confidence, and embrace authenticity in who you are and who you’re becoming.
Life Transitions: Major life changes often bring uncertainty and stress. I support clients through these transitions by helping them process emotions, develop clarity, and create strategies to navigate change with resilience and purpose.
Substance Use and Addictions: I take a harm-reduction and trauma-informed approach to help individuals address the root causes of substance use. Together, we build practical strategies for recovery, foster resilience, and work toward lasting change.
Crisis and Suicidal Ideation: In moments of overwhelming pain and uncertainty, I provide a safe and compassionate space to explore feelings and find hope. Using evidence-based crisis intervention techniques, I help clients build coping strategies as we work toward healing.
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: I help clients understand and address the underlying emotions and triggers contributing to self-injury. Together, we develop healthier coping mechanisms and create a path toward greater emotional regulation and self-compassion.
Approaches: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Somatic Therapy (SE). I will be adding Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in the Spring.
Populations: Youth (16+), Adults and Couples.
Specializations: Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Grief/Loss, Relationship Challenges, Self-Esteem/Identity Exploration, Men’s Mental Health, Substance Use and Addictions, Crisis and Suicidal Ideation, and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.
Education and Experience: I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of Victoria and a Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. My practicum, completed through a non-profit counselling organization, further enriched my understanding of working with diverse populations, particularly those facing substance use challenges and chronic mental health struggles.
Beyond the Work: Outside of therapy, I enjoy exploring the beauty of Vancouver Island through hiking adventures with my fiancé and our three dogs. I’m also a passionate coffee enthusiast, always on the hunt for hidden cafes serving the perfect cup. These simple joys inspire the balance and mindfulness I bring into my work with clients.
