About Cheryl Carters-Rolfe, Intern Counsellor
Intern Counsellor
Hi, I’m Cheryl, and I’m currently completing my Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. I offer low-cost counselling to individuals, parents, couples, and families, and I’m passionate about supporting people in overcoming life’s challenges. My goal is to help you identify your strengths, build resilience, and create a healthier, more fulfilling life. I believe that our relationships — both with others and with ourselves — play a huge role in our overall well-being, and I’m here to help you gain insight into those dynamics.
With my background in facilitating workshops for families and communities, I’ve gained a deep understanding of the complexities that shape our connections and influence our mental health. I’m dedicated to walking alongside you as you navigate life’s ups and downs, offering guidance and encouragement as you grow through the process.
I work with a variety of mental health concerns, and here are a few areas I’m particularly focused on:
Individual Counselling: I provide a caring and empathetic space where you can explore the deeper roots of anxiety, emotional distress, depression, or isolation. Together, we’ll work on developing practical skills to manage stress, increase calm, and build resilience, even when life feels uncertain. I’m also here to support you in making meaningful, step-by-step changes that align your life more closely with your personal values and goals, so you can move forward with greater clarity and purpose.
Relationship Counselling: Long-term relationships can be incredibly rewarding but also challenging. I support couples in strengthening their connection by improving communication, resolving conflicts in a constructive way, and reigniting intimacy. My aim is to help you and your partner feel more connected and fulfilled in your relationship.
Parenting Support: As a mother of three and someone who has facilitated parenting groups, I understand the unique joys and challenges of raising children. I’m here to offer compassionate support as we explore how your own upbringing might be influencing your parenting today. Through this process, I’ll help you shift unhelpful patterns, deepen the connection with your child, and bring more self-compassion to your parenting journey.
Women’s Mental Health: Whether you’re navigating postpartum changes, adjusting to motherhood, managing career transitions, or dealing with menopause and aging, I’m here to support you. I understand the many roles women balance and the unique challenges that come with life’s transitions. Together, we’ll find ways to cope, grow, and create a better balance between work, family, and self-care.
Approaches: Mindfulness and Somatic Based Practices, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Attachment-Based Therapy.
Specializations: Anxiety, Depression, Self-Esteem, Emotional Dysregulation, Life Transitions, Parenting Issues, Women’s Mental Health, Loneliness, Communication and Relationship Challenges.
Populations: Youth (14+), Adults, Parents, Families and Couples.
Education & Work Experience: I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Community and Regional Planning, and am currently pursuing a Master of Counselling degree at City University of Seattle. I have a rich history of training and volunteering with Living in Families Effectively (L.I.F.E.) seminars, helping parents and couples enhance their relationships and parenting skills. I also have experience with urban environmental issues and community development projects aimed at combating loneliness and fostering neighbourly connections.
Beyond the Work: With my three young adults now off on their own, I have more time to deepen my skills to better support my clients. Outside of counselling, I maintain a yoga practice and enjoy time outdoors with my husband of 25 years, kayaking, hiking, paddle-boarding, swimming, gardening and walking our dog. I’m also dedicated to nurturing strong connections with my extended family, friends and neighbours.
